Delhi Commission for Women chief, Swati Maliwal, has written to National Aids Control Organisation asking it to file a status report why it had stopped the supply of condoms to sex workers in GB Road in the capital.

In her letter, Maliwal said she discovered the stop in supply of condoms to sex workers by NACO during her recent visit to the area.

She wrote, ” Under the National AIDS Control Programme, Phase IV, Delhi State AIDS Control Society is supposed to have received 12 lakh free condoms each month from National AIDS Control Organisation and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. However, it’s reported no supply of condoms has been received by DSACS since April 2015 except a one time supply of 24 lakh condoms in May 2015. This has resulted in a severe crisis at GB Road and has exposed the sex workers and others to potentially high risks of contraction of HIV.”

Maliwal asked the NACO to explain the reason behind stopping the supply of condoms to sex workers and the steps it had taken to resume the supply adding that this decision had endangered the lives of 5000 sex workers many other men.
