Delhi Police gives in to AAP’s demand, will release 2000 home guards

Delhi police has decided to release 2000 home guards to be deployed in DTC buses next week.

This decision comes after Delhi AAP government threatened to protest outside the residences of Lt Governor, union home minister and the prime minister.

AAP leader Sanjay Singh had said, “This protest will involve our frontal organisations like the women’s wing, youth wing and the students wing, and will be on a large scale. If they do not answer, we will have to push them to act.”

These home guards will be deployed in DTC buses as marshals to provide safety to women travelling in these buses. Delhi police had earlier rejected the Delhi government’s demand on the grounds that they were employed in police work.

AAP Delhi unit convener Dilip Pandey had said, “Everybody knows what work the 4,000 to 4,500 home guards are put to. They do odd jobs in homes and as cleaners. We have written several letters to the L-G but have always received a negative response. We keep asking the L-G why they are not being released, what is the reason? We feel that they would be better served acting as marshals in buses like we promised the people.”

Providing marshals in Delhi’s buses was one of the key elections promises of the Aam Aadmi Party. Kejriwal. Delhi’s current strength of home guard stands to 5000. In a high profile meeting, which was attended by Delhi’s home minister Satyendra Jain, chief secretary KK Sharma, DTC’s CMD and representatives of various other departments, an agreement was reached that the Director General of home guard will spare 4000 personnel with 500 home guards being released each fortnight. The DG will begin recruiting more home guards soon.
