Militants stormed an army camp in Jammu and Kashmir’s border town of Tangdhar on Wednesday, triggering a fierce gun-battle, an official said.
“Gunfire started on Wednesday inside Gorkha Rifles camp in Tangdhar town of Kupwara district after militants attacked the camp,” a senior police official was quoted by IANS.
It is a stand-off with militants, the official added.
An army officer told Reuters that the attackers cut through a perimeter fence and entered the Tangdhar camp.
Indian news channels reported that fighting was continuing, and the army had launched a counter-offensive to combat the gunmen. No further details were immediately available.
Last week, fighting in the same district saw an Indian colonel killed in a gun battle with militants, while two soldiers were seriously injured.
