Twitter’s decision to remove the blue tick from several accounts held by RSS leaders including Mohan Bhagwat and Vice President Venkaiah Naidu has left Hindutva supporters incensed as they trended #BanTwitterInIndia. The controversy gained momentum after the Indian government served ‘one last notice’ to the social media giant warning of consequences if it did not comply with the new IT Act.

Twitter exploded with an angry reaction from the right-wing brigade after Twitter removed the verified status of several RSS leaders including Mohan Bhagwat,  Suresh Soni, Arun Kumar, Suresh Joshi and Krishna Kumar among others.

Twitter also dropped the blue tick from Naidu for a prolonged period of inactivity as the Vice President had not posted a single tweet since July last year. However, Naidu’s status was restored in no time.

Incensed by Twitter’s decision, Hindutva supporters took to Twitter demand the social media platform’s ban in India as hashtag #BanTwitterInIndia trended nationally.

Meanwhile, the Centre’s Narendra Modi government has issued ‘one last notice’ to Twitter after the latter reportedly did not comply with the new IT rules. The notice from the ministry of electronics and information came amidst Twitter removing the verified status of the Twitter account held by Vice President Venkaiah Naidu.
