In a trouble for British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, his top cabinet colleague and Health Secretary Sajid Javid has resigned from the government, saying that he could ‘no longer continue in good conscience.’
Javid wrote on Twitter, “I have spoken to the Prime Minister to tender my resignation as Secretary of State for Health & Social Care.
“It has been an enormous privilege to serve in this role, but I regret that I can no longer continue in good conscience.”
Javid was appointed the new Health Secretary in June last year after Matt Hancock resigned over the kissing scandal.
Javid’s resignation came immediately after Johnson apologised for appointing Chris Pincher deputy chief whip despite’s allegations of sexual harassment against the latter. Johnson had to face widespread condemnation for ignoring the warnings from top civil servants.
Faced with widespread condemnation, Johnson on Tuesday said that it ‘was a mistake’ and ‘in hindsight the wrong thing to do.’
Pincher had to resign last week after he was accused of groping two men in a private members club.
In a strongly-worded letter to parliament’s standard’s commissioner, former Foreign Office permanent secretary Lord McDonald had accused 10 Downing Street of making ‘inaccurate claims’ on the controversy. Lord McDonald had said that Downing Street kept ‘changing their story and are still not telling the truth.’
