Djokovic’s historic win had eight aces, no double faults, 34 winners and 63% of the total points won. He also successfully converted five break points in the final. Soon after winning his match point, Djokovic fell to his knees and roared with delight.

Speaking after the presentation party, Djokovic said, “I’m trying to contemplate on the journey in the past 12 months. I had surgery exactly 12 months ago. To be standing now here, in front of you today, managing to win this title and three of the four Slams is truly amazing. I’m speechless.

“I would like to thank my team for supporting me. You guys are always behind me, tolerating me on my bad days, putting together a great successful format that is working very well.”

Nadal, for his part, said, “First thing I have to say is many congratulations to Novak and his team. It was an amazing level of tennis tonight and during the two weeks. Well done for everything.

“I want to continue saying thank you very much to all the people who make possible the event.” He said that he was ‘going to keep fighting hard.’

As former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli pointed out, the crowd were expecting the final to last a bit longer, but the result came as a shocker to the 15-time Grand Slam winner Nadal. She wrote, “We all anticipated this final, expecting such a close match, a repeat of the 2012 final. For Rafa, to get dispatched like this in two hours, that is really hard on him, especially after all the injury he has been through. Novak just did everything much better than him tonight.”

Four-time Grand Slam winner Kim Clijsters said, “When you have kids you learn to balance your time a little bit. Now, with balancing family time and being a professional athlete, whatever you do on court you put in 100% work and try not waste your time out there. Djokovic definitely didn’t waste any time out there tonight!”
