Huge explosions rock Chinese city of Tianjin


There are reports of a huge explosion an industrial area in the northeastern Chinese city of Tianjin.

The explosion took place at around midnight on Wednesday. Eye witnesses say they could feel the impact of blasts several kilometers away. Initial reports say several people have been injured. Domestic media said the number of people injured was around 50, but the state broadcaster China Central Television said that ‘unknown number of people’ had been injured in this blasts, which took place in ‘a shipment of explosives.’

Yang, an eyewitness, told local media she was out shopping when “suddenly from behind there was a big fireball and explosion”.

She said, “At the time of the explosion the ground was shaking fiercely, nearby cars and buildings were shaking, a few buildings’ glass all broke and everyone started to run. Now all the residents are gathered in the street.”

Videos of these explosions show two massive blasts within few seconds from each other causing huge smoke and lighting in the sky. The video shot by a local resident from a distance show the intensity of these blasts.

News agency Xinhua too said that close to 50 people had been injured. There is no confirmation on the number of people killed yet.

Local media reported that several nearby tower blocks were without power.

Tianjin is an important port and industrial area and home to 7.5 million people.
