Rohit Sharma on Tuesday broke a cricketing milestone held by the Indian cricket captain, Virat Kohli, days after Pakistan’s Babar Azam broke one of his records in T20 internationals.
Rohit, who needed just 11 runs to become to highest run scorer in the shortest form of cricket, achieved the feat without much trouble as he opened for India against the West Indies at Ekana International Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.
Up until now Kohli had scored the most runs for India in T20 international matches 2,102 runs in 62 matches with an average of 48.88. Before the Tuesday’s match against West Indies, Rohit had scored 2,092 runs in 85 matches with a batting average of 32.18. He needed just 11 runs to become the highest scorer for India.
Rohit Sharma remained not out at 111 off 61 balls as India piled up a total of 195 runs in 20 overs. In response, West Indies could only 124 runs in 20 overs for the loss of nine wickets.
Earlier this week, Pakistani batsman Babar Azam had become the fastest cricketer to reach 1,000 in T20 international matches. Azam achieved this feat during a match against New Zealand on Sunday. The Pakistani opener scored 79 in 58 deliveries, but he demolished Kohli’s records when he reached 48.
This was Babar Azam’s 26th T20 match for Pakistan. Kohli had achieved the feat in 27 matches for India. Pakistan has won the T20 series against New Zealand, played in Dubai. His innings helped Pakistan beat New Zealand 3-0 in the just-concluded series.
The Indian selection committee has rested Kohli for the ongoing T20 series against West Indies. His three consecutive centuries had seen India beat the visiting team in the just concluded ODI series.
The Indian skipper is likely to return to represent his team in T2o games when the team travels to Australia later this month.
