US athlete’s extraordinary protest during medal ceremony against Donald Trump’s support for hate

A member of the US fencing team has become a hero after he staged an extraordinary protest during a medal ceremony against his own country’s President, Donald Trump. Race Imboden knelt on the podium in protest against Trump’s support for hate and racism.

Later sharing his photo, Imboden wrote, “We must call for change. This week I am honored to represent Team USA at the Pan Am Games, taking home Gold and Bronze. My pride however has been cut short by the multiple shortcomings of the country I hold so dear to my heart. Racism, Gun Control, mistreatment of immigrants and a president who spreads hate are at the top of a long list.”

He added, “I chose to sacrifie my moment today at the top of the podium to call attention to issues that I believe need to be addressed. I encourage others to please use your platforms for empowerment and change.”

Olympic medallist Imboden was a part of the US fencing team that won the gold medal at the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru on Friday.

Trump has emerged as the most racist President in US history. Earlier this month, two back-to-back mass shootings in Ohio and Texas had left more than 29 people dead. Far from condemning the act of terrorism, Trump had said that the two terrorists were suffering from mental illness.
