India’s run-machine Rohit Sharma on Wednesday equalled the batting average of Sir Donald Bradman after he scored his first century as an opener against South Africa. Sharma was unbeaten at 115 when the rains stopped the first day’s play at the ACA-VDCA Stadium in Visakhapatnam.

This was Sharma’s fourth century in Test matches and first as an opening batsman. He’s now scored 884 runs in 15 Test innings while playing at home with a batting average of 98.22. Sir Don Bradman averaged 98.22 while playing in Australia in 50 innings.

Sharma’s innings included 12 fours and five sixes. Also joining him at the crease was Mayank Agarwal, who remained not out at 82 with 11 fours and two sixes.

Speaking about his role as the new Test opener, Sharma said, “I was prepared for the past two years about the fact that at some stage I might have to open. So mentally, I was ready for it. Opening the batting in red-ball cricket is a different ball game compared to limited overs.”

Sharma said that he had absolutely no confusion as to how he wanted to approach the game as an opening batsman.

India were 202 for no loss when the rains stopped the day’s play. Sharma’s innings included 12 fours and five sixes. Also joining him at the crease was Mayank Agarwal, who remained not out at 82 with 11 fours and two sixes.

Although South African bowlers failed to take any wickets on Wednesday, their only solace came in the form of Kagiso Rabada bowling five maiden overs of the total 13 overs that he bowled on the first day.
