Cheteshwar Pujara made 43, while Rahane departed after scoring 42. Wriddhiman Saha (9) and Ravichandran Ashwin (15) remained unbeaten as the first day’s play ended. Another highlight of today’s play was the poor form of India’s opening batsman Prithvi Shaw, who returned to the dressing room without scoring a single run.

Mitchell Starc was the most successful bowler for Australians, taking crucial wickets of Prithvi Shaw and Ajinkya Rahane. Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon shared one wicket each.
