Daredavil gymnast Dipa Karmakar on Sunday pulled off a remarkable feat to win gold in the women’s vault event at the Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup in Turkey. This despite the fact that she has been grappling a career threatening injury for last two years.
Two years ago, Dipa had won hearts of over one billion Indians even in her failure to win the coveted Olympic Gold at Rio Olympics. In fact, it was at Rio Olympics, where the star called Dipa Karmakar was born in the world of gymnastics.
Dipa, from the north eastern state of Tripura, had emerged as one of the few shining spots on a disastrous Indian campaign as she ended up just outside a medal bracket with 15.066 points after putting on a superb display in the eight-woman vault final. While applauding her performance at Rio Olympics, actor Akshay Kumar had spoken for every India, when he wrote, “You may have lost but you’ve won a million hearts and inspired a lot more to walk your path. Cheers to your spirit Dipa Karmakar!”
The popular athlete’s quest to redeem herself got adversely affected because of an unexpected Anetrior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury. However, when the Tripura girl returned to action at the Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup, she scored 14.150 to clinch the gold metal. Dipa had topped the qualification round with a score of 13.400.
The 24-year-old has also qualified for the balance beam finals by finishing third in the qualification with a score of 11.850, reported IANS.
The lengthy lay-off period, which started after the 2016 Rio Olympics, also kept her out of the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games held earlier this year. Dipa will now feature in the Indian gymnastics squad at the upcoming Asian Games.
