President Ram Nath Kovind on Saturday nominated former MP Ram Shakal, RSS ideologue Rakesh Sinha, classical dancer Sonal Mansingh and stone artist Raghunath Mohapatra to the Rajya Sabha on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
A statement by Prime Minister’s Office said, “Ram Shakal is an eminent people’s leader and public representative from Uttar Pradesh, who has devoted his life for the welfare and well-being of the Dalit community. A farmer leader, he is widely respected for championing the cause of farmers, labourers and migrants.”
Sinha, who hails from Bihar, has been a popular face on the India TV channels, frequently defending the Centre’s BJP-led government on numerous issues.
Mohapatra is an internationally renowned authority on stone carving and has been practising since 1959. He has contributed to the preservation of traditional sculpture and ancient monuments and has worked on the beautification of the Sri Jagannath Temple in Puri, reported Hindustan Times.
Bharatnatyam and Odissi for over six decades and is among India’s foremost exponents of Indian classical dance. Union Minister Harsh Vardhan had recently met Mansingh as part of his party’s Sampark for Samarthan campaign ahead of 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
