Separatist leader Shabir Shah was detained by the police on Friday on the charges of waving a Pakistani flag during a rally in Anantnag, Jammu and Kashmir.

It has been reported that during the rally, Shah’s supporters waved Pakistani flags and raised slogans, which led to his arrest. Another separatist leader was detained, along with Shah, by the police near Khanabal.

BJP spokesperson Khalid Jehangir told PTI that the act of hoisting Pakistani flags would not be tolerated and action should be taken against the culprits as per the law.

Jehangir added,”These separatist leaders should stop misleading the people and if they feel they have the support of the masses, they should participate in the elections.”

Awami Action Committee and supporters of Hurriyat chairman Mirwiaz Umar Farooq had waived Pakistani flags last week. Reacting to this incident, the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, whose party the BJP is a coalition partner in Jammu and Kashmir government, had said, “New Delhi would not tolerate the waving of Pakistani flags and pro Pakistan slogans.”

The valley has been experiencing a sharp rise  in unrest since Mufti Saeed formed the government in Kashmir.
