Miss Iraq, Sarah Idan, and her family have had to leave the country allegedly under duress after she posted a photo with Miss Israel on Instagram.
Idan had posed with Miss Israel, Adar Gandelsman, at a Miss Universe International Beauty Pageant. Her caption had read, “Peace and Love from Miss Iraq and Miss Israel.”
Idan faced backlash for both posing with an Israeli model and also wearing bikini during the beauty contest. Speaking to an Israeli TV channel, Gandelsman said, “The two of those things together caused a mess for her back home where people made threats against her and her family that if she didn’t return home and take down the photos, they would remove her (Miss Iraq) title, that they would kill her.”
In another Instagram post, Idan apologised to those who felt her action had hurt the Palestinian cause. She said that it was not a political statement, but only intended to “express hope and desire for peace between the two countries,”
Iraq does not have diplomatic relations with Israel with both countries. Israel’s aggression has meant that not only are millions of Palestinians being forced to live like refugees, but millions have had to lose their lands as Israeli forces occupied them using brutal force.
Not so long ago, the Trump administration had further provoked the Palestinians by announcing that it will recognise Jerusalem as the Israeli capital.
