Slobodan Praljak, a war criminal, consumed poison at the International Criminal Court in The Hague after the judge sentenced him to 20 years in jail. The entire episode was capture live on camera as the proceeding was being broadcast.
The 72-year-old ex-commander of Bosnian Croat forces drank something from a plastic cup as the judge pronounced the verdict. Praljak yelled at the judge saying ‘I reject your verdict..I am not a war criminal.’
It took a while for the judge to realise that the war criminal had consumed poison prompting him to suspend the proceedings.
Praljak was sentenced in 2013 for crimes in the city of Mostar during the Bosnian ethnic cleansing that took place during 1992-1995.
Praljak and five other convicted war criminals were attending the final appeals judgment, that were meant to be handed down by the court.
Bosnian Croats and Muslims were allies during the war but they also fought against each other for nearly a year. Mostar in particular had experienced some of the bloodiest carnage.
