On Friday afternoon, a hashtag #HomeMinister began to trend on twitter. No, Rajnath Singh had not stoked any controversy. Neither had he made any more comments defending Sushma Swaraj or Vasundhra Raje.
The topic became a subject of intense discussion on twitter after the news website Firstpost flashed a headline on Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal’s planned meeting with LK Advani later on Friday.
There was one problem with the headline though. The news flash on twitter addressed LK Advani as Home Minister.
This prompted twittratis to start mocking the website, while others recognised that this may have been an oversight.
Even though the news of Arvind Kejriwal meeting LK Advani was untrue, there is a context to this social media outrage.
LK Advani was in news on Thursday because of his comments that the forces that ‘can crush democracy’ were still active adding that he couldn’t rule out the emergency like situation even today. He was speaking to an English newspaper ahead of the 40th anniversary of emergency.
Arvind Kejriwal was quick to praise the BJPn patriarch before wondering if Delhi was ‘their (BJP’s)’ first experiment.
Firstpost soon tweeted a clarification regretting the error.
In the end Kejriwal’s planned meeting with Advani didn’t take off and it had to be cancelled.
