Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Friday turned the heat on Prime Minister Narendra Modi after he staged massive protests outside the CBI headquarters against the constitutional coup carried out by the government to punish the head of India’s premier probe agency.

Congress’s head of communications, Randeep S Surjewala, later said that Rahul had been arrested along with other senior leaders by the Lodhi Road Police. Those joining Rahul in his protest march incessantly chanted ‘Gali Gali Mein Shor Hai, Chaukidar Chor Hai (Streets are buzzing with noise that our security guard is a thief).”

The thief jibe for the security guard was aimed at Modi, who had always identified himself as a security guard. Later, after emerging out of the Lodhi Road Police Station, Rahul said, “PM can run, he can hide but in the end, truth will be revealed. Removing #CBI Director will not help. PM acted against CBI Director; it was an act out of panic.”

The Congress leaders have been protesting against the removal of CBI Director Alok Verma after he initiated action in corruption cases against his deputy Rakesh Asthana, who’s believed to be very close to Modi.

Rahul had also said that Verma was about to launch a probe into the Rafale deal, which was signed by Modi himself with the French government.

The Supreme Court on Friday ordered the CVC to complete the investigation against Verma and submit the report within 10 days before it issues an order on Verma’s petition against the central government’s decision to remove him from his post.

The government had said that it was the CVC’s decision to remove Verma from his post in light of alleged corruption allegations.

The Congress also staged similar protests in Lucknow outside the office of the CBI.

Here are the highlights of today’s protests:
