North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in his New Year’s Day address said on Monday that his country has completed its nuclear arsenal and he has the ignition button ready “always on” his desk.
“We achieved the goal of completing our state nuclear force in 2017,” Kim said in a televised message broadcast by the North Korean state network.
“The entire mainland of the US is within the range of our nuclear weapons and the nuclear button is always on the desk of my office. They should accurately be aware that this is not a threat but a reality,” said Kim during his annual New Year’s Day address.
Kim said that his country’s biggest achievement in 2017 was the “historic accomplishment of completing our nuclear capabilities.”
He added, “No matter how much America wants to attack us with their military might and nuclear power, they know that now we possess such great nuclear power and therefore they will not dare.”
North Korea has till date carried out six underground nuclear tests over the years and has demonstrated missiles of increasing power prompting the international community to leave the country isolated.
Kim, however, said that the relationship between North Korea and South Korea could improve in the new year.
He said, “The year 2018 is a significant year for both the North and the South, with the North marking the 70th anniversary of its birth and the South hosting the Winter Olympics.”
