Vyapam’s mysterious deaths: CBI registers case of murder in Namrata Damor’s death

CBI on Friday registered a case of murder in the mysterious death of Indore Medical College student Namrata Damor.

Namrata’s body was found near railway tracks in Ujjain three years ago. A team of three doctors who conducted autopsy on her body said she was smothered to death and reported semen on her clothes. Director of state medico legal institute Dr D S Badkur, however, contradicted their finding claiming she committed suicide by jumping off the train.

Analysts say the this latest development will cause considerable embarrassment to the state’s chief minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan and the BJP, who’ve so far maintained that Vyapam related deaths were not murders.

Interestingly, Namrata’s death was not part of the 23 cases submitted to the Madhya Pradesh High Court by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) about unnatural deaths of people linked to the Vyapam scam.

Earlier this month, Akshya Singh, a journalist with Aajtak was found dead in mysterious circumstances while on a Vyapam scam related reporting assignment in Madhya Pradesh. Namrata’s father was the last person Akshay had interviewed before being found dead.

The Vyapam scam is a huge admission and recruitment scandal involving politicians, bureaucrats and middlemen. Several politicians, including former state Education Minister Laxmikant Sharma, a host of officials and aspirants have been arrested in the case.
