Police in Mumbai say that they’ve arrested the venture capitalist Mahesh Murthy on the charges of sexual harassment. He’s accused of harassing a Delhi-based woman and using obscene language on WhatsApp.
His arrest came after the National Comission for Women had written to the police in Khar in Mumbai last year in December. The cops had booked him based on the NCW letter on 29 December.
“Murthy was in Goa and he came to Mumbai on Friday morning. We arrested him from his residence,” Senior inspector Ramchandra Jadhav was quoted by Hindustan Times.
A tweet by NCW said, “Based on a complaint filed at the Commission and following NCW’s successful intervention, #MaheshMurthy has been arrested by @MumbaiPolice today u/Sec 354 IPC read with 67A of IT Act. @sharmarekha @MinistryWCD.”

Murthy had said that he merely replied with a lips emoticon while replying to a WhatsApp message from the woman in question.
“On 25 December 2016, the lady sent me Christmas greetings via WhatsApp and I replied with the lips emoticon. She found this message objectionable and started venting her anger on social networking sites. When I came to know about it, I apologised to her and she accepted it,” he was quoted as saying.
