Venkaiah Naidu is BJP’s candidate for Vice President elections


Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu will be the NDA’s vice presidential candidate, the party sources confirmed on Monday.

One leader said that the decision was to enhance the prospects for the saffron party in the south Indian states, where the BJP is desperately trying to make inroads into.

The opposition parties have already declared the name of Gopal Gandhi as their joint candidate for the VP polls.

Born 1 July 1949, Venkaiah Naidu, who is currently a part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi as Minister of Housing, Information and Broadcasting, has b en a four time MPs. He was also the BJP president between 2002 and 2004.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that M Venkaiah Naidu was a fitting candidate for the office of Vice President soon after the senior BJP leader was chosen as the ruling NDA’s candidate.

Modi described 68-year-old Naidu as a farmer’s son who “brings years of experience in public life and is admired across the political spectrum”.

He said he has always admired the hardwork and tenacity of Naidu, currently a minister in his Cabinet holding the portfolios of Information and Broadcasting and Urban Development.

“I know @MVenkaiahNaidu Garu for years. Have always admired his hardwork & tenacity. A fitting candidate for the office of Vice President,” the prime minister tweeted, soon after the announcement of the decision of BJP’s Parliamentary Board, the highest decision-making body of the party.

“The years of Parliamentary experience @MVenkaiahNaidu Garu has will help him discharge the important role of Rajya Sabha Chairperson,” Modi added.

The Vice President is also the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.

The electoral college for the August 5 election consists of 790 MPs of the two chambers of Parliament.

Naidu will file his nomination tomorrow at 11 AM, Shah said.

Tomorrow is the last day for the filing of nominations.
