Congress claims victory while BJP ‘concedes’ defeat

Deposed chief minister of Uttarakhand, Harish Rawat, on Monday claimed that he had won the confidence vote in the Uttarakhand assembly.

It was advantage Congress from the beginning as both the Uttarakhand High Court and Supreme Court refused to allow the 9 rebel Congress MLAs to take part in the trust vote.

While analysts too felt that Rawat was set to win the vote of confidence today, the Congress was jolted by the news that one of its MLAs, Rekha Arya, had reportedly switched side.

Rawat needed the support of 31 MLAs to win the trust vote; with nine Congress rebels barred from voting, the strength of the 70-member assembly was down to 61.

According to reports, Rawat polled 31 votes with the help of BSP and Independents, BJP could get only 27. One rebel BJP MLA too was reported to have voted for Rawat.

BJP’s political rivals have already started criticising the saffron party for the central government’s decision to dismiss an elected government of Uttarakhand.

Delhi chief minister, Arvind Kejriwal, said, “Uttarakhand floor test outcome is a huge setback to Modi Govt. Hope they will stop toppling Govts now.”

Here are the live updates on today’s proceedings:

  • One of the BJP MLAs said that his party was willing to sit in the opposition. He told NDTV, “We were in the opposition, so there is nothing wrong for us to sit in opposition for another six months.”

  • Voting is over. The official responsible supervising said that the votes have been sealed in envelopes and sent to Supreme Court, which will announce the results tomorrow.
  • “Of course we will win. A majority of the MLAs are with us, the people of Uttarakhand are with us, the gods are with us,” said a confident Mr Rawat, who hopes to scrape through with the support of 34 lawmakers.
  • BSP supremo, Mayawati, says that her two legislators will vote in favour of Congress. She told reporters that her decision was takenn because of her determination to defeat communal forces.
  • President’s Rule has been removed for two hours to facilitate the floor test, as directed by Supreme Court.
