Some parts of the northern Indian hill state of Uttarakhand were jolted by a minor earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale on Tuesday, an official said.
The official also said that the temblor was felt in Pithoragarh, Haldwani and some parts of the tourist hub of Nainital. There was no loss of life or damage to property.
Disaster management teams were on the standby for any eventuality that might arise due to the aftershocks that seismologists have predicted.
The state government has asked the people not to panic.
Uttarakhand is an active seismic zone and has experienced many quakes in the past.
