Police in Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh have booked a priest after a woman complained of being raped by Swami Kanhaiya Nand inside the temple on 9 July.

According to the complaint, the woman said that she had gone to the temple with another woman earlier this month, when the head priest of the temple in Dhoom Manikpur village called her inside his room and raped her.

Greater Noida Deputy Superintendent of Police Avaneesh Kumar said that a case had been registered against Swami Kanhaiya Nand, who had absconded after the incident.

The temples falls under the jurisdiction of the Badalpur police station. Kumar said that efforts were underway to arrest the absconding swami.

Earlier this month, a mother of two was sexually assaulted by at least five people inside her house in Uttar Pradesh before her tormentors burnt her alive in a nearby temple. Last month, a  self-proclaimed saint Daati Maharaj, a Delhi based sect leader, was booked for raping a disciple. He heads Shani Dham temple in Fatehpur Beri, Delhi.

Safety of women has been a big challenge for the Uttar Pradesh government led by Yogi Adityanath. Irresponsible statements by BJP leaders have only shown that the government was simply not serious in tackling the crimes against women.

Only recently, a senior member of the BJP had sensationally blamed Muslim’ population for rising number of rapes in the country. BJP MP Hari Om Pandey had said that the cases of heinous crimes such as rape and murder were rapidly increasing due to the growing Muslim population in India.

“The menaces such as of terrorism, rape, sexual harassment prevailing in India is only because of the rising Muslim populations. If one looks closely, there is a rapid increase in the percentage of Muslim populants since the time of Independence,” Pandey was quoted by ANI.
