Officials in Uttar Pradesh said on Saturday that the body of Yunus, a witness in the Unnao rape case who died recently, was exhumed.
“The body of Yunus was exhumed tonight and it was sent for post-mortem examination. The body was exhumed in the presence of Qazi sahab (religious leader),” Unnao Additional District Magistrate BN Yadav was quoted by PTI.
Earlier in the day, district authorities met relatives of the witness seeking consent to exhume his body for a post-mortem examination.
The mysterious death of the key witness in the rape and murder case had evoked angry reactions from the opposition parties, who slammed the state’s BJP government for shielding one of its MLAs, accused in the high-profile rape and murder case.
Congress President Rahul Gandhi last week had slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the mysterious death and burial without autopsy of Yunush. BJP MLA Kuldeep Sengar is the prime accused in the sensational rape case that had led to the death of the victim’s father in police custody.
Rahul had said that it ‘smells of a conspiracy.’ Taking to Twitter, he had asked PM Modi, “The mysterious death & hurried burial without an autopsy, of the key witness in the #Unnao rape & murder case, involving BJP MLA Kuldeep Sengar, smells of a conspiracy. Is this your idea of ‘justice for our daughters’, Mr 56?”
Faced with unprecedented outrage, Uttar Pradesh Police had finally filed an FIR against BJP MLA Sengar and others for allegedly raping a 17 year old Unnao girl, whose father had died in the police custody in April. Senger was booked under various sections of IPC and POSCO Act.
A DSP rank officer was also suspended for not responding to the repeated complaints of the victim and her family.
The father of the woman, who alleged rape by a BJP MLA, had died in police custody in Uttar Pradesh, raising questions on the near-collapsed law and order in the state under Yogi Adityanath government. The deceased was arrested after he along with other family members attempted suicide outside the residence of UP Chief Minister on Sunday protesting police’s inaction.
The shocking incident of the rape victim’s father succumbing to injuries sustained by beating has evoked angry reactions with activists questioning the deteriorating law and order in Uttar Pradesh.
