Two IIT Roorkee professors arrested in bridge collapse case

Police in Uttarakhand say that they have arrested two professors of IIT Roorkee namely Vipul Prakash and Vijay Kumar Gupta in connection with the collapse of an under-construction bridge in Tehri district three years ago.

The collapse of the under construction bridge, whose design was prepared by these two professors, had claimed eight lives.

Prakash and Gupta taught in the IIT Roorkee’s Civil Engineering Department.

Haridwar SSP, Sweety Agarwal, said that they were arrested from their apartments in Roorkee’s civil lines area on Sunday evening adding that a non-bailable warrant had already been issued against the professors after they failed to appear in court.

The under-construction bridge over river Alaknanda in Tehri district had collapsed in 2012 killing eight people including a Junior Engineer.

Police had arrested the owners of the two construction companies involved in the building of the bridge on Thursday last week.
