The Hyderabad High Court on Wednesday said that the traders, who ripened the fruits using carcinogen calcium carbide, were ‘worse than terrorists.
The HC has ordered both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to conduct investigations into the practice of using chemicals to ripen the fruits in these states.
Six weeks ago, the HC had directed both the state governments to conduct raids and find out more about the practice and how to put an end to it.
“For earning some extra rupees, you are putting scores of lives at risk. Such traders are worse than terrorists, killing generations of people with slow poison,” the Chief Justice was quoted by the Times of India.
The bench has also directed the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to file affidavits on what informing what steps they had taken to prevent the use of carbide in fruits.
Calcium Carbide, which is used to make fertilizers and steel, is has dangerous properties and its carcinogenic properties is known to cause digestive problems to those who consume such fruits.
