Police in Jammu and Kashmir said on Sunday that security forces had killed top Al-Badr commander Zeenat-ul-Islam in an encounter in Kulgam district. A senior police official said that the two militants killed in the Katpora encounter had been ‘identified as Zeenat-ul-Islam and Shakeel Ahmad Dar.’ “Both were involved in several terror crimes,” he added.
A report by news agency PTI said that Islam was a category A++ militant and had switched over to Al-Badr from Hizbul Mujahideen in November last year following consensus between the two outfits to strengthen the Al-Badr.
Security forces received information about the militants’ presence inKatpora area of Yaripora in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Saturday. They wasted no time in launching a cordon and search operation. According to police, militants began to fire upon the security team carrying out the search operation.
They were reportedly given an opportunity to surrender, but they continued to fire, said the official. According to a police spokesperson, both the killed militants were affiliated with Al-Badr and were wanted by the law for ‘their complicity in a series of terror crimes including attack on security establishments and civilian atrocities.’
A statement by police said, “Apropos our earlier press release regarding the encounter at Kathpora, it is further informed that the killed miitants have been identified as Zeenat-ul-Islam alias Zeenat alais Usman son of Ghulam Hassan Shah resident of Shopian and Shakeel Ahmad Dar son of Abdul Rasheed Dar resident of Chillipora Shopian.”
