Industrialist Naveen Jindal has called the Indian ministry of education’s decision to award the ‘Institution of Eminence, status to OP Jindal Global University a ‘historic recognition.’ A visibly elated Jindal, who’s also the Founding Chancellor and benefactor of OP Jindal Global University, tweeted, “This is a historic recognition for @JindalGlobalUNI. Congratulations to the VC, faculty members, students, parents of our students and the staff of JGU for their hard work, commitment & dedication, which led to this fantastic recognition in a decade since its inception.”

A statement by the OP Jindal University said that with the confirmed status as an ‘Institution of Eminence’, it had now entered a coveted group of top 10 private institutions in the country ‘to be unshackled from regulatory controls and be given full autonomy.’

“The search for ‘Institutions of Eminence’ began in the year 2017 with the introduction of the ‘UGC (Institutions of Eminence Deemed to be Universities) Regulations, 2017’ for private institutions and ‘UGC (Declaration of Government Educational Institutions as Institutions of Eminence) Guidelines, 2017’ for public institutions,” the statement read.

Jindal’s industrialist brother, Sajjan Jindal, too said that he was proud to learn that the OP Jindal University was the only ‘Non-STEM & Non-Medicine University to receive this award’ from the ministry of education. His tweet read, “Very proud that #OPJindal Global University has been recognised by the @EduMinOfIndia as an ‘Institution of Eminence’. Especially heartening that this is the only Non-STEM & Non-Medicine University to receive this award. A testament to the efforts put in by the faculty and staff.”

Congress MP and former union minister, Shashi Tharoor, tweeted, “Congratulations @MPNaveenJindal & VC Prof C Raj Kumar for what you have done to take @JindalGlibalUNI to the heights of eminence in little over a decade. Keep up the good work: Indian education needs excellence in both private & public sectors!”

Last year, OP Jindal Global University was included in the global top 150 amongst all young universities that are under 50 years of age by the QS Young University Ranking.
