Tension in Kashmir’s Pulwama after a policeman allegedly attempted to molest a girl

Heavy clashes and incidents of stone pelting between protesters and security forces were witnessed on Monday in Pulwama town of Kashmir following an alleged molestation bid by a policeman.

According to eye witnesses, clashes erupted after a youth objected to policeman, while he was allegedly attempting to molest a girl, in the afternoon in Pulwama town.

Policeman has been suspended and an inquiry commissioned, said a police officer.

The angry protesters alleged that  policeman of Jammu and Kashmir police’s Special Operation Group attempted to molest a girl  and prevented her to lodge complaint in police station.

When the news spread in the town, people took to the streets  and started  protesting the cop in question. They resorted to stone pelting against police and para military forces, injuring three people including an SoG personnel.

Police and paramilitary forces had to fire in the air and use tear gas shells to disperse the demonstrators.

Local residents said that the shopkeepers in the area  downed their shutters and there were no vehicles on the roads within few minutes after the news spread.

Senior Superintendent of Police(SP), Pulwama ,Tajinder Singh told jantakareporter.com,” W e have suspended the cop. Inquiry has been ordered into the matter. Now, we will get  the statement of a woman who alleged the molestation by the policeman. No one is above the law. If anyone  has committed  crime he must be punished.”

Situation is now under control  in the area , said a police official.
