The court said that Chidambaram’s family members and lawyers were allowed to meet him for 30 minutes every day during his custody.

Chidambaram had moved the Supreme Court on Wednesday against the Delhi High Court’s order to reject his plea for an anticipatory bail in the INX Media corruption case. His appeal against the Enforcement Directorate will come up for the hearing on 27 August, while the top court will his petition against the CBI tomorrow, reported news agency ANI.

On Thursday at the special CBI court, senior Congress leaders and lawyers Kapil Sibal and Abhishek Manu Singhvi represented Chidambaram, while Solicitor General Tushar Mehta argued for the CBI. Mehta said that the federal probe agency was ‘merely seeking court’s permission to interrogate the accused further’ since the case involved ‘intelligent people.’

Chidambaram, himself a lawyer, also sought the CBI’s permission to argue his case briefly even though Mehta opposed his request. Singhvi reminded an order by the Delhi High Court allowing an accused to argue for himself.

The judge rejected Mehta’s objection and allowed Chidambaram to present his case. Speaking in the court, the former finance minister said, “Please look at the questions and answers, there are no questions which I have not answered, please read the transcript. They asked if I have a bank account abroad, I said no, they asked if my son has an account abroad I said yes.”
