In the most explicit hint yet, the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, on Friday said that Rahul Gandhi could soon take over the reigns of power in the party.
Speaking on the sidelines of former president Pranab Mukherjee’s book launch in Delhi, she said, “You have been asking this for so many years and it’s now happening.” The party’s top decision making body, Congress Working Committee, last November had nominated Rahul’s name for the party’s top post last November, subject to Sonia’s approval.
The Congress organisational polls are underway and many state units have already passed resolutions urging Rahul Gandhi to take over as the party reins.
Sources in the party say that Rahul could take over as the party chief from her mother after Diwali.
State party committees in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab have passed resolutions supporting the elevation of Rahul as the party president in the last few days. Uttarakhand, Delhi and four other state units have also passed similar resolutions.
In Punjab, Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh had moved a resolution requesting Rahul to lead the party. The resolution was seconded by PPCC chief Sunil Kumar Jakhar.
Sources in the party said that Rahul was all set to be elected as the Congress president soon after Diwali. He’s recently travelled to the poll-bound Gujarat. where he received considerable support.
