In the video, Sanjay Raut, who’s been the member of the Upper House of the Indian parliament since 2004, was heard saying, “It’s an election season and time and again we are reminded about the Model Code of Conduct. So, we always have a fear about the Model Code of Conduct. First, we are not people who believe in law.” This caused a huge laughter in the crowd.

Raut continued, “Hum aise log hain, bhaad mein gaya kanoon, achar sanhita bhi hum dekh lenge. Jo baat hamare mann mein hai wo agar hum mann se bahar nahi nikalein to ghutan si hoti hai (We are like that. To hell with the constitution. We will also deal with the Model Code of Conduct. If we don’t say what we have in our mind then we start feeling suffocated.”

His comments evoked strong reactions from on social media. Twitetr user Dinesh R wrote, “These are the worst form of lawless goons. They have got used to flouting all laws and getting away with it, no matter who is in power. They think breaking laws is an achievement.” User Akhilesh Malviya called him the Azam Khan of the BJP-led NDA.

User Neha wrote, “They can do nothing constructive or progressive, India is plagued with these foolish destructive elements.”

Raut’s Shiv Sena is an alliance partner of the BJP in Maharashtra and both are contesting the Lok Sabha polls together. This year’s Lok Sabha polls are taking place in seven phases with the counting scheduled for 23 May.
