In a big embarrassment to the BJP, the saffron party’s ally, Shiv Sena, on Sunday conceded that it was wrong to have labelled the JNU Students Union leader Kanhaiya Kumar as ‘traitor.
The party chief, Uddhav Thackeray, told media in Nashik, “Kanhaiya Kumar has been labelled ‘deshdrohi’ (anti-national) wrongly. Youth are in huge numbers in our country and therefore the Centre must take care.”
Thackeray warned the BJP of losing support among youth.
Thackeray’s criticism for BJP came on the day Kanhaiya claimed that an alleged BJP office-bearer had attempted to strangulate him on board a Jet Airways flight in Mumbai.
The Mumbai police later said that the allegations by JNU students’ leader were untrue.
This is not the first time the Shiv Sena has slammed the BJP. Only last week, the party’s mouthpiece had described the Uttarakhand High Court’s verdict quashing the Centre’s President’s Rule in the hill state as ‘disrobing’ of the central government.
