Former top cop of Mumbai, Satyapal Singh, who’s now a junior HRD minister in Narendra Modi’s cabinet, has asked teachers to teach students about the Indian, who invented plane before the Wright brothers.

Speaking at an award ceremony for the first AICTE-ECI Chhatra Vishwakarma Award held on Tuesday, Singh said, “Why are students not taught that before the Wright brothers, an Indian called Shivakar Babuji Talpade was the first to invent the airplane. This person invented the plane eight years before the Wright brothers. Are our students taught these things in IITs or not? They should be.”

A report by Hindustan Times quoted Singh as saying that he wanted engineering students at IITs to be taught about Vishwakarma, the Hindu deity, worshipped by craftsman community.

Singh may have drawn inspiration from his boss, PM Modi, for rewriting history in a spectacular fashion. Speaking in Mumbai in October 2014, Modi had claimed that the genetic science existed even during mythological period.

He had said, “We all read about Karna in the Mahabharata. If we think a little more, we realise that the Mahabharata says Karna was not born from his mother’s womb. This means that genetic science was present at that time. That is why Karna could be born outside his mother’s womb.”

Modi did not stop here. He went on to claim that plastic surgery was a great contribution to the field of medicine and he gave example of Lord Ganesha.

He said, “We worship Lord Ganesha. There must have been some plastic surgeon at that time who got an elephant’s head on the body of a human being and began the practice of plastic surgery.”

According to a report by London’s The Guardian, as Gujarat chief minister, Modi also wrote the foreword to a book for school students in the state which maintains, among other things, that the Hindu God Rama flew the first aeroplane and that stem cell technology was known in ancient India.

Modi’s home minister, Rajnath Singh, had told students of a posh Delhi college that dhoti wearing Indian babas were knew more about science than NASA scientists.

He had said, “USA’s NASA can make the prediction that after a month, solar and lunar eclipse will happen at this time… the media says America has such advanced technology, it is predicted one and-a-half years, two years ago. I can say with confidence that if you go to the dhoti-wearing pandit in the neighbourhood, he will pull out the ‘panchang’ and tell you when the lunar and solar eclipses happened 100 years ago and when they will happen 100 years later.”

Satyapal Singh had joined BJP to successfully contest Lok Sabha elections after retiring from the Indian police force.
