Sania Mirza-Martina Hingis clinched the US Open Women’s Doubles title on Sunday after they beat Casey Dellacqua-Yaroslava Shvedova in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.
This was their second Grand Slam title after they won their first title together at Wimbledon this year. In July, Sania created history by becoming the first woman from India to win a major title in the seniors category at Wimbledon. Top-seeded Sania and her Swiss partner Hingis had beaten Russia’s second-seeded pair of Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina 5-7, 7-6, 7-5 in the final of the women’s doubles on Saturday.
Leander Paes while partnering with Hingis had won the mixed doubles title a day earlier.
Shvedova, who was scheduled to get married on Saturday, had to cancel her wedding plans due to her surprise run to the championship match.
President Pranab Mukherjee was one of the first to congratulate both Sania and Paes on their splendid performance at the US Open.

Sania and Hingis emerged as a fresh pair this year and have been virtually unbeatable in most tournaments they have played since.
India’s best female tennis player Sania was just six years old when she started playing tennis at the Nizam club in her home town of Hyderabad. She is currently married to Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik.
Last year, Sania had been the subject of a major controversy after she hit back at people who argued she was not a patriotic Indian just because she had married a Pakistani.
