Rohit, Bhuvneshwar, Binny released to play in Ranji Trophy

The BCCI on Thursday released three Indian team players, part of the squad for the first Test against South Africa but not picked in the playing XI, so that they could represent their state teams in the ongoing Ranji Trophy tournament.

In a statement, the BCCI said that Rohit Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Stuart Binny were released after they were not picked in the XI as the first Test began in Mohali on Thursday.

“They will join their respective state teams for the next round of Ranji Trophy matches. The players will rejoin the Indian Test team before the start of the second Test of the Freedom Trophy in Bangalore,” the BCCI said.

“Punjab Ranji Trophy players Gurkeerat Singh Mann and Mandeep Singh will assist the Indian team as reserve players during the Test match at Mohali,” it said.

The idea behind the move is to give these players match practice instead of sitting in the players’ dressing room or carrying drinks/playing gear to the middle when batsmen/fielders require them.
