The performance report on the cabinet ministers in Narendra Modi government has been presented and the best-performing ministries have reportedly been Power, headed by Piyush Goyal, and Nitin Gadkari’s Roads and Highways Ministry.

Surprisingly, Smriti Irani’s HRD Ministry doesn’t feature as one of the top performers in the report presented by the economic affairs secretary on Thursday.

An NDTV report said that the report card also presented an update on each ministry’s work as well as their accounts to the Prime Minister and other top members of his office.

All ministries, the report further added, had submitted their presentations to the economic affairs secretary.

The exercise is believed to have lasted for five hours and it assumes significance in light of next week’s possible cabinet reshuffle before the prime minister leaves for Africa tour.

The health ministry was reportedly described as the least-performing. This reportedly didn’t go down well with the prime minister, who has said that he would like to see faster progress on plans for state-run hospitals like Delhi’s AIIMS in other parts of the country.

Irani was reportedly told to speed up the work on creating more IITs and IIMs, business and engineering colleges, while the Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad was reminded the urgent need for improved connectivity and urgent steps for stopping call-drops.

Modi’s cabinet currently has 66 ministers including the Prime Minister. It cannot exceed 82 members.

The cabinet resuffle is expected to see a promotion for Goyal and more representation from Uttar Pradesh in view of next year’s assembly elections.
