Renowned criminal lawyer Ram Jethmalani had passed away at the age of 95, six days before he was set to celebrate his 96th birthday on 14 September.
Reacting to his death, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on Twitter, “In the passing away of Shri Ram Jethmalani Ji, India has lost an exceptional lawyer and iconic public figure who made rich contributions both in the Court and Parliament. Kejriwal wrote on Twitter, “Extremely saddened at the passing away of legendary lawyer Ram Jethmalani ji. An institution in himself, he shaped criminal law in post-independence India. His void would never be filled and his name will be written in golden words in legal history.”
Congress President Sonia Gandhi too extended condolences on his death.
Jethmalani was arguably one of the most high-profile lawyers of his time. Among the top case that he fought were the famous KM Nanavati versus State of Maharashtra case in 1959, a multi-crore 2G scam in 2011 and Arvind Kejriwal vs Arun Jaitley in recent times. Kejriwal later apologised to Jaitley bringing an end to the case.

Jethmalani was the lawyer of veteran BJP leader LK Advani in the infamous Hawala scam.
He was also the Union Law Minister in the BJP government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 1998 and then again in October 1999. However, he quit the Vajpayee government in July 2000. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha on six occasions. In 2010, he was elected as the president of the Supreme Court Bar Association.
The renowned lawyer’s body later cremated at Lodhi Road crematorium in Delhi on Sunday afternoon.
