It’s done! We asked for 10 days. We did it in 2: Rahul Gandhi

Rajasthan became the third Congress-ruled state on Wednesday to announce a loan waiver up to Rs 2 lakh, as promised by the party chief, Rahul Gandhi during the election campaign.

Wednesday’s announcement came just days after two other Congress-ruled states, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, made similar announcements. Congress had wrested these three states from the BJP in the just-concluded assembly polls.

Gandhi tweeted, “It’s done! Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh & Chhattisgarh have waived farm loans. We asked for 10 days. We did it in 2.”

Announcing the decision, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot told reporters, “Rahul Gandhi, our party president, had said in the election campaign that we will waive off farmers’ loan within 10 days of forming the government. I’ve just given the order to waive off the entire loan for farmers owing  money to cooperative banks.”

Gehlot said that the previous government led by Vasundhara Raje had broken the promise, but the Congress government will do its best to bring respite to farmers so that no more farmers commit suicide in the state.

Gehlot’s deputy, Sachin Pilot, too tweeted, “According to the promise made by Congress President Rahul Gandhi ji, our government has announced the loan waiver for farmers. Congress delivers what it promises.”

On Tuesday, Rahul Gandhi had said that he will not let Prime Minister Narendra Modi sleep until farmers’ loans were waived off. His warning had followed two BJP-ruled governments, Gujarat and Assam, announce relief for farmers in their states.

On Wednesday, Gandhi had taken a dig at the BJP once again stating that he had managed to wake BJP chief ministers up and it was time for PM Modi to wake up.
