Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Monday responded to Goa BJP MLA Vishwajit P Rane’s allegations that the leaked audio tape with his voice was doctored. He said that Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had never discussed about the presence of documents related to Rafale deal in his bedroom.
“The audio tape is doctored. Congress has stooped to such a low level to doctor a tape to create miscommunication b/w cabinet and CM. Mr Parrikar has never made any reference to Rafale or any documents. Have asked him for a criminal investigation into this,” Rane was quoted by news agency ANI.
Reacting to Rane’s comments, Gandhi asked why the state government of Goa had not filed any FIR or launched inquiry if the audio clip was doctored. He wrote, “30 days since the Goa Audio Tapes on RAFALE were released. No FIR or enquiry ordered. No action against the Minister either! It’s obvious that the tapes are authentic & that Goa CM, Parrikar, is in possession of explosive RAFALE secrets, that give him power over the PM.”

Rane, who was elected as the Congress candidate in the 2017 assembly elections, had later joined the BJP. Earlier this month, the Congress had released an audio tape of a conversation, purportedly between Parrikar’s cabinet colleague, Vishwajit Rane and an unknown journalist. In the tape, Rane was heard discussing a cabinet meeting, where Parrikar had allegedly claimed that he had the secret Rafale documents saved in his bedroom.
The release of the audio clip had caused pandemonium in the parliament as Congress President Rahul Gandhi was not allowed to play the audio in the parliament by Speaker Sumitra Mahajan and Union Minister Arun Jaitley.
Both Parrikar and Rane had called the audio ‘doctored’ and allegations against them baseless. But, the Congress has now asked why no FIR has been filed in the matter. The party also demanded sacking of Rane from the Goa cabinet for ‘running down’ the image of Parrikar.
