There have been plenty of speculation on whether the BJP MP from Sultanpur will ditch his party to join the Congress, a party headed by his cousin Rahul Gandhi. The speculation stemmed from reports that BJP Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi were not happy with him. Soon after Shah was made in-charge of the party in 2014, he had stripped Varun Gandhi of a key party post.
On Friday, Rahul Gandhi was in Odisha, where he took part in an interactive session in the state capital. He was asked if Varun Gandhi was joining the Congress in a bid to reunite the Gandhi-Nehru clan. Pat came his reply, “I have not heard this speculation.”
His reply came just two days after Priyanka Gandhi officially entered politics by accepting the role of the AICC General Secretary for Eastern Uttar Pradesh, which has Modi’s home constituency Varanasi.
Varun Gandhi is believed to be extremely close to his cousins Rahul and Priyanka. However, the BJP MP from Sultanpur has not officially reacted to rumours of him joining the Congress. His mother, Maneka Gandhi, is the Union Minister for Women and Child Development in the Modi government.
Meanwhile, BJP MP Subramanian Swamy has supported a call for Varun’s elevation within the saffron party. A BJP supporter had tweeted suggesting that Varun should be given more responsibility in the party. He had written, “Now it’s time to elevate Varun gandhi in @BJP4India crucial position because he is most educated gandhi (in family) had worked extensively in rural india?? Not a seasonal politician like their cousins he will give nightmares to congress.”
Swamy wrote extending his support to this idea as he wrote, “Not a seasonal politician like their cousins he will give nightmares to congress. Yes I agree.”

The outspoken BJP Rajya Sabha MP added, “He is not the only one sidelined. I can enumerate 23 able leaders who have been sidelined who had laid the foundation for BJP emerging as a ruling party. It happens in every party but where the leadership knows how to marshal talent in the party prospers.”
