Amidst raging debate over what’s being termed India’s own MeToo campaign, a horrific story has emerged from Punjab, where a woman was gang-raped twice in one day. The alleged incident took place in Punjab’s Lakhanpur Khole and Dayalpur villages of Kapurthala district on 10 October.
According to reports, the woman said in her complaint that she was sexually brutalised by people known to her twice in the same night. She was first gang-raped by three of her friends during a birthday party in Lakhanpur Khole village. One accused Siri and his friends brutalised her in a nearby fields.
A report by India Today said that her cries for help could not be heard because of the loud music being played in the background. The woman then took refuge in Dayalpur village at the house of one Satpal Singh, who too was known to her. While at Satpal Singh’s house, he along with his friends Sukhwinder Singh, Ravinder Singh and Kulwinder Singh allegedly gang-raped her second time within the space of few hours.
The woman had reportedly come in contact with Siri through her friend Sonu, a known drug peddler in the area. The rape victim said that she had met Sonu and Bholu because of addition to drugs.
Following her complaint, a complaint was filed at the Subhanpur police station. A subsequent medical examination too confirmed that she had been raped.
Station House Officer Satnam Singh was quoted by India Today, “We have registered a case of gangrape and have arrested four out of 10 accused. The rest are on the run. We have formed teams to arrest them.”
