India’s new crush and teenage sensation, Priya Prakash Varrier, has moved the Supreme Court against the FIR filed against her and the director of the Malayalam film, Oru Adaar Love.
In her petition filed in the Supreme Court, Varrier confirmed that FIRs against her were filed by the police in Telangana and Maharashtra. She’s requested the expeditious hearing of her petition by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra.
“The song describes and praises the love between the Prophet Mohammed and his first wife Khadeeja and this has been misunderstood by the complainants,” NDTV quoted her petition.
A Muslim outfit, Raza Academy, too had written to the Commissioner of Mumbai Police requesting the removal of the song from digital platform alleging that the lyrics of the song were objectionable to Muslims.
Priya’s petition said, “The song is a folk song and has been in existence for the last 40 years and cherished by the Muslim community of more than one crore in Kerala. The allegation that the song hurts sentiments of Muslims is baseless because there is no FIR in Kerala. People misunderstood the song in non-Malayalam-speaking states,” she says in the petition.”
The 33-page petition went on to say, “Just because the song became Viral, viewers started to use Google and/or online translations tools to translate the lyrics which has led to distortion of the lyrics and meaning of the song in other states where Malayalam is not the language.”
Janta Ka Reporter was the first news platform to report the filing of the FIR against the 18-year-old actor from Kerala. The song of the yet-to-be-released Malayalam film has gone viral since its release. This also resulted in a phenomenal increase in Priya’s popularity, She added nearly four million followers on Instagram in just few days.
