Police in Haryana have arrested the priest of Baba Balaknath temple for raping and filming over 65 women disciples. The arrest took place after the videos of the godman sexually assaulting his disciples surfaced on social media platforms.
“We have filed a case and have started an investigation in the matter,” news agency ANI quoted a police officer as saying.
The 60-year-old godman has been identified as Baba Amarpuri, who’s also known as Billu. According to police, he would rape his female disciples and film them in objectionable conditions before using the video clips to blackmail them.
The police said that they were alerted after as many as 90 videos of Baba Amarpuri’s sexual acts surfaced on social media platforms prompting the cops to raid the temple on Friday.
A report by India Today said that whilst the same woman featured in most videos, at least 65 were distinct cases of sexual harassment and rape. The controversial religious head has been booked under section 376 (rape), 292 (obscenity), of the Indian Penal Code. Deputy Superintendent of Police Joginder Sharma said his team was interrogating him to know more about his crimes.
A woman had filed a complaint against the baba in October 2017 in Tohana in Fatehabad area of Haryana, which has been notorious for so-called spiritual gurus sexually assaulting their women disciples.
Last year in August, another self-styled guru, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, was handed over 20 years in jail for raping and murdering his female disciples. His conviction and sentencing had caused unprecedented violence across Haryana.
Soon after the verdict, the supporters of Singh had set ablaze and damaged OB vans of several news channels besides setting police vans on fire in Panchkula. His army of disciples had moved in with lightening speed to ‘deliver’ on their ‘promises’ of wiping out India from the world’s map. Within hours, as many as 30 people had died with more than 250 injured.
