The counting of votes to the 14th Presidential Elections of India have come to an end and the NDA Candidate, by far the most popular choice has emerged as a clear winner by #RamNathKovind 65.65% votes. #MeiraKumar gets 34.35% votes.
Ram Nath Kovind got 7,02,044 votes while his opponent, the joint Opposition candidate Meira Kumar, got 3,67,314 out of a total of 10,69,358.
He has successfully contested the election against the UPA Candidate, Ms. Meira Kumar, who repeatedly termed the election as a Fight of Ideologies.
71 year old Kovind, was born on October 1, 1945 in Kanpur Dehat, Uttar Pradesh to a farming family. While he holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce, he also possesses an LLB from the Kanpur University.
Kovind’s passion for the Civil Services paved his way to Delhi to appear for the UPSC exams, which he cleared on the third attempt. However, Kovind declined the opportunity in Allied Services as he was largely keen on IAS. He then went ahead to further pursue and practice law instead.
Kovind’s stint with politics began in 1991 when he joined BJP and went on to serve as the President of the BJP Dalit Morcha from 1998 to 2002 and thereafter as the President of All India KoliSamaj. He had contested earlier from Ghatampur & Bhognipur on behalf of BJP, however, was unsuccessful on both accounts.
Background to Kovind’s journey before full fledged politics:
A successful stint in High Court as well the Supreme Court for over 15 years from 1977 to 1993 adds to his vast biodata. During this tenure, he was also appointed as the Executive Assistant to the then Prime Minister, Morarji Desai.
Since Kovind was a born Dalit who was also a people’s person, he became an unofficial spokesperson for the oppressed and underprivileged groups.
A lesser known fact is that Kovind was a member of the Management Board, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University, Lucknow and Board of Governors, IIM, Kolkata.
About His Personal Life : Married to Savita Kovind, who together have one son and a daughter.
Other Details : In October, 2002, Kovind proudly represented India at United Nations, New York. Kovind was appointed the Governor of Bihar in August 2015 by the President of India and has proved himself well by working tirelessly towards bringing about important changes in Bihar, particularly in the educational sector. He resigned as the Governor of Bihar following his nomination as a presidential candidate.
Kovind is the second Dalit president after K.R. Narayanan in the history of India.
