President pays homage to Nehru

On the 51st death anniversary of India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, President Pranab Mukherjee and Vice-President Mohammad Hamid Ansari paid homage to the leader.

The commemoration took place at Nehru Memorial in New Delhi. President Mukherjee laid a floral wreath on the memorial along with Vice President Ansari. Congress president Sonia Gandhi, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and other party leaders also visited the Memorial and paid their respect.

Nehru was independent India’s first and longest serving Prime Minister from August 15, 1947 to May 27, 1964.

He was also a prolific writer, scholar and an amateur historian. Nehru was born on November 14, 1889 in Allahabad and died on May 27, 1964.
