Poll strategist Prashant Kishor, who successfully managed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 2014 Lok Sabha elections victory, said Priyanka Gandhi’s foray in active politics was long ‘awaited.’ Kishor, who later managed the election of mahagathbandhan comprising the JDU, the RJD and the Congress, in 2015 assembly elections of Bihar, also helped the campaign of Captain Amarinder Singh of the Congress in Punjab two years later. He, however, failed to repeat his successful stint the same year, when he was roped in to assist the Congress-SP alliance in the UP elections.
Moments after Priyanka’s appointment as the AICC General Secretary in-charge of Eastern UP was announced, Kishor, now an office-bearer of the JDU, tweeted, “One of the most awaited entries in Indian politics is finally here! While people may debate the timing, exact role and position, to me, the real news is that she finally decided to take the plunge! Congratulations and best wishes to Priyanka Gandhi.”

Kishor earned plaudits from social media users for his tweet as one user wrote, “This is decency and good mannerisms, Well done PK.” Another user wrote, “I will like to thank you, during your short stint with congress party, particularly in UP,your prescription of giving Priyanka gandhiji a vital role in reviving the congress in most populous state is finally endorsed, thanks also to Bua-Bhatija combo for not making alliance.”
Congress President Rahul Gandhi had earlier announced that Priyanka Gandhi had been made the All India Congress Committee General Secretary for East UP ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.
The official communication had read, “Honourable Congress President has also appointed Smt Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as AICC General Secretary for Uttar Pradesh East. She will be taking charge with effect on first week of February 2019.”
Gandhi is currently visiting his constituency on a two-day tour. Ahead of his visit, he had taken to his Facebook page to write, “I am coming to Amethi. Will be with my people and discuss issues with them. Will keep sharing the details of my story of happiness with you by way of pictures.”
Jyotiraditya Sicndia too was made the AICC General Secretary for Uttar Pradesh West. These appointments assume significance in light of this year’s Lok Sabha polls. The Congress is not a part of the non-BJP grand alliance comprising the Samajwadi Party, the Bahujan Samaj Party and the Rashtriya Lok Dal.
