Police accountable to system, not any individual: Bassi says following chilling murder of 19-year-old

Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi has defended himself on the issue of maintaining law and order in the capital, and has appeared to counter Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal while saying that the police is only accountable to the system and not a specific individual.

“We are the strong arm of the government which is a big responsibility,” Bassi told reporters ahead of his meeting with Kejriwal on Monday at 4 pm.

Earlier on Monday, Bassi had met Lt Governor Najeeb Jung over the same issue. A 19-year-old girl was knifed to death on Thursday night in a crowded New Delhi market because she had complained against her stalker.

“It is my duty that I should remove any misconceptions about policing. I have a good opportunity with the meeting to clear misconception if any,” Bassi had said on Sunday.

Following the murder, Delhi minister Satyendra Jain has written a letter to Bassi, demanding a detailed report as to why no action had been taken before against the stalker who allegedly stabbed the girl with the help of his mother and brother.

The minister even indicated in the letter that Delhi police had not improved the slightest post the deadly Nirbhaya rape and death incident that shocked the capital city in 2012.

Kejriwal had also lashed out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi on this matter saying the Delhi police came directly under the PM and that he should spare a few hours every week to assess the capital’s law and order situation.

On Saturday evening, Kejriwal had visited the family of the deceased girl, who was stabbed 35 times to death before announcing the help of Rs 5 lakh to the victim’s family.
